What “Nervous System Regulation” Actually Looks Like in a Reiki Session

This phrase is everywhere right now, but most people don’t come to me asking for nervous system regulation.

They come because they feel overwhelmed. Anxious. Wired but exhausted. Shut down. Like they can’t quite settle in their own body anymore.

So I want to talk about what is actually happening in a Reiki session, without the buzzwords.

Most of the time, we are not trying to “fix” anything.

We are creating space for your system to stop bracing for a while.

That might sound simple, but it matters.

When your body has been in stress mode for a long time, even rest can feel unfamiliar. So a Reiki session is often the first time your system gets a different experience: nothing is being asked of you.

Here is what supports that shift in my work:

A steady, calm environment
Your body relaxes more when it knows what to expect. The session is simple, consistent, and grounded.

  • A grounded presence with no pressure
You are not being analyzed or fixed. You are just allowed to be where you are.

  • Slowing everything down
No rush. No agenda. Your system sets the pace, not me.

  • Gentle awareness instead of instruction
If anything is guided, it is soft. Like noticing breath or sensation, never forcing change.

People often ask me about the sounds I make during a session—the deep sighs, the occasional hiccup, or the frequent yawns. It isn't because I’m tired or bored.

My body has its own way of processing the energy that is moving through the room. These are physical 'releases.' When your system starts to let go of that 'wired' tension, my system responds. A yawn or a deep breath is often just a sign that a block has cleared or that your nervous system has finally shifted into a state of rest. It’s the sound of things settling.

What people often notice isn’t dramatic. It is subtle.

A deeper exhale they didn’t realize they were holding.

A moment where the mind finally quiets a little.

A sense of “I didn’t know I needed this much space.”

That is what nervous system support actually feels like in real time.

Not something you have to perform. Not something you have to understand. Just space where your body can stop working so hard for a while.

And from there, things begin to shift on their own.
