The Myth of Being "Opened" to Reiki | Beyond the Noise: Part 2
Lately, I’ve been seeing more and more conversations online suggesting that you either need to be “opened” to Reiki or that you can simply attune yourself through meditation and intention alone.
Personally, I don’t fully agree with either extreme.
I don’t believe Reiki is something we are disconnected from until someone opens us up to it. I also don’t believe it’s something that can be reduced to a quick internal visualization and called complete attunement.
Reiki is universal life force energy. We are already in relationship with energy because we are made of it and surrounded by it.
Our Instinctive Connection to Energy
Think about how humans naturally respond to pain or discomfort. When you have a headache, you place your hands on your head. When a child falls, they instinctively touch the injured area. When someone is grieving, we hold their hand or place a hand on their shoulder.
You’re already doing it!
That is already energetic awareness in action.
So no, I don’t believe Reiki is something we need to be “opened” to in order to access. We are already interacting with it.
If We Are Already Connected, Why Train?
At the same time, Reiki training still matters deeply because it gives structure, understanding, and ethical grounding. Without that, people are often left piecing together ideas without context.
From "Opening" to Awareness
Even in Holy Fire Reiki, where placements are used instead of traditional attunements, I experience it less as being “opened” and more as being guided into a deeper awareness of something I am already connected to.
That distinction matters to me.
Because Reiki is not about becoming something new. It is about becoming more conscious of what is already here.
