Who Attuned Mikao Usui? | Beyond the Noise: Part 3
One question I keep coming back to is this: if Mikao Usui developed Reiki through his own spiritual practice and experience, then who attuned him?
Modern Reiki conversations often frame attunements as the gateway into Reiki itself. As if someone has to open you before you can access it.
But Usui’s experience doesn’t really fit neatly into that idea.
From what is commonly understood, he developed Reiki through deep meditation, spiritual discipline, and direct experience rather than being attuned in the way we teach it today. Usui wasn't trying to "become" a healer—he was stripping away everything else until the energy was all that was left. It was a process of uncovering, not adding.
That raises a different question for me.
If Reiki is universal life force energy, then what are we actually doing when we talk about attunements?
I don’t ask that to dismiss Reiki training. I ask it because I think it invites a deeper reflection.
Maybe attunement is less about creating access and more about awareness. A way of deepening a relationship with something we are already part of.
For me, Reiki is not something locked away that needs to be unlocked. It is something we are already in relationship with.
And maybe the real question is not who opened Usui, but how he became so aware of what was already there.
In my mentorships and classes, we don't just focus on the 'opening'—we focus on the discipline of awareness that Usui modeled."
