Just for Today, I Will Not Worry: A Reiki Practitioner’s Guide

When we first step into Reiki, everything feels big. Big responsibility. Big energy. Big potential to “mess it up.” And the truth is, many new practitioners carry their past patterns and old worries right into a session, unintentionally letting doubt or fear influence their healing.

This is where the Reiki precepts can become more than words on a page. Take the precept “Just for today, I will not worry.” At first, it can feel impossible. Worry is ingrained. But in the context of giving Reiki, this precept isn’t just about personal calm—it’s about creating a clean, clear energetic space for your client.

Does worry stop Reiki energy from flowing?

A question I hear often from new practitioners is: “If I’m worrying or doubting, does that stop the Reiki energy from flowing?” The short answer: Reiki always flows. It is not dependent on your mood or perfection.

What your worry can do, though, is affect your presence at the table. When you let your doubts take the driver’s seat, you’re more likely to give your energy away—not intentionally, but because you’re attached to a specific outcome. And here’s the rule I stick to: we do not give our energy to clients. We are channels, not problem-solvers. When we attach ourselves to the result, our own energy gets entangled with theirs. That’s when sessions feel “off,” or practitioners feel drained afterward.

Here’s a simple way to bring this precept into your practice:

  1. Check in with yourself before each session. Notice any worry or self-doubt. Name it quietly, then set it aside.

  2. Use the precept as an energetic reset. Whisper it to yourself or hold it in your mind: “Just for today, I will not worry.” Let it wash over the session space.

  3. Focus on the client’s energy, not your performance. Reiki is about being a channel. Doubt only clouds the flow.

In my private Reiki classes, I work with students to notice these patterns without judgment and to gently release them. The precepts aren’t moral rules—they are tools to help us show up fully, right where we are, in the energy we are offering.

Remember: your Reiki is always enough when your intention is clear. Worry doesn’t make you a better practitioner—it only clouds the healing. So just for today, breathe, let it go, and trust the flow!
