Can You Practice Reiki Without Taking a Reiki Class?

A Conversation That Keeps Coming Up

I recently saw a post in a Reiki Facebook group where someone shared that they practice Reiki even though they’ve never taken a Reiki class or received an attunement. As expected, the comments quickly filled with strong opinions on both sides, with some insisting that Reiki cannot be practiced without formal training and others arguing that everyone already has access to healing energy, so anyone can practice Reiki. Like many conversations in Reiki circles, there was more certainty than clarity, and very little agreement on what people actually meant by the word “Reiki.”

The real issue is that people are often speaking about two different ideas while using the same term, which is where a lot of the confusion starts.

A minimalist arrangement of natural elements in a quiet, grounded Lexington healing space.

Healing Energy and What Has Always Existed

If we are talking about healing energy itself, then no, Reiki did not invent that. Human beings have been placing their hands on one another, praying, offering comfort, and working with intention and energy for thousands of years across every culture. Long before Reiki was ever named, people were already engaging in forms of healing that involved presence, touch, intuition, and focused care, so the idea that healing energy only exists within Reiki doesn’t really hold up when you look at history.

This is where my perspective sometimes differs from other Reiki practitioners, because I don’t believe attunements suddenly give someone access to energy they never had before. I don’t believe human beings are energetically disconnected until a Reiki teacher comes along and turns something on. From my experience, we are already energetic beings, and healing energy has always been available whether someone has taken a Reiki class or not.

How I’ve Experienced Attunements as a Teacher

Years ago, when I taught Reiki in group classes, I would often tell my students that I didn’t view the attunement process as something that was suddenly opening their chakras or giving them access to an energy they couldn’t previously reach. Instead, I experienced it more as a reminder process, something that helped bring awareness to what was already there rather than introducing something completely new.

Many students had already experienced moments in their lives where they felt intuition, presence, calm, or a subtle awareness of energy, but they didn’t always recognize those experiences or trust them. The attunement, in my experience, seemed less like switching something on and more like helping them remember what Reiki feels like and giving them a structure to trust that experience.

For some students, the experience was subtle and grounding, while for others it felt profound and emotional, but I never felt comfortable telling people that they had been energetically disconnected before their attunement and suddenly became connected afterward. To me, that framing never matched what I was seeing in real time.

That doesn’t make attunement unimportant, because it absolutely is a meaningful part of Reiki tradition and how the system has been passed from teacher to student for generations, but I see it more as a process of recognition and connection rather than a dramatic energetic switch being flipped.

Reiki as a System, Not Just Energy Work

At the same time, acknowledging that healing energy exists outside of Reiki doesn’t mean that all energy work is Reiki. What Mikao Usui developed was a specific healing system with teachings, practices, and a structured method for working with energy that could be passed from teacher to student, and that structure is what distinguishes Reiki from general energy healing practices.

This distinction matters because if everything becomes Reiki, then the word itself loses meaning and no longer describes anything specific. When that happens, it becomes difficult to understand what someone actually means when they say they practice Reiki, which is where a lot of confusion in online conversations tends to come from.

Why Language Matters in This Conversation

When someone says they practice Reiki without training, my first question is usually, “What do you mean by Reiki?” If they are referring to working with healing energy, intention, or intuition, then yes, that absolutely happens, and people do it all the time. If they are referring to the specific system that Usui taught and that has been passed down through Reiki lineages, then that becomes a different conversation entirely if there has been no study or training in that system.

This is also where discussions tend to become polarized, with one side insisting that only attuned practitioners can access healing energy and the other side insisting that training doesn’t matter because energy is universal. My experience is that the truth sits somewhere in between those extremes.

Healing energy is not owned by Reiki, but Reiki is also not just a general label for anything involving energy or healing intention.

A Simple Way to Hold Both Truths

The word Reiki refers to a specific practice that developed from Usui’s teachings and was passed down through generations of practitioners and teachers; if every form of energy work is labeled Reiki, then the word eventually stops having any real meaning. At the same time, someone can absolutely be a skilled energy worker, intuitive, or healer without ever stepping into a Reiki classroom, and that does not diminish their ability or experience in any way.

Both things can be true at the same time, and they don’t have to cancel each other out.

Healing energy existed long before Reiki, and Reiki is still a defined system for working with that energy. When we can hold both of those ideas without collapsing them into one, the conversation becomes a lot less confusing and a lot more grounded in reality rather than debate.
