Does a Reiki Student Need to Be Re-Attuned Because Their Energy Isn't Strong Enough?

Every so often, I see a claim in Reiki circles that goes something like this:

"I had to re-attune a student who learned from another teacher because their Reiki energy wasn't very strong."

Whenever I hear that, I have one question: How exactly was that measured? Was there a Reiki meter involved? A machine? A test? A number on a scale? As far as I know, none of those things exists.

What usually happens is that someone places their hands on another practitioner and makes a judgment based on their personal feelings. The problem is that sensations like heat or tingling are completely subjective; one practitioner may feel intense heat while another feels nothing at all. One student may be highly sensitive to energy, and another may barely notice a thing, but neither experience tells us how much Reiki is actually flowing. Some teachers have convinced themselves that stronger sensations equal "stronger" Reiki, but that is an assumption, not a fact.

The bigger question is this: If Reiki is an intelligent spiritual practice that does not come from our personal energy, why would it suddenly become weak because of who taught the class? That idea suggests that Reiki itself is somehow dependent on the teacher's personality, power level, or spiritual status, turning the teacher into the source of the energy rather than a guide helping a student learn a lifelong practice. Historically, this wasn't how Reiki was understood at all. Mikao Usui taught students, who taught students, who taught more students, with zero discussion of one lineage producing "stronger" Reiki than another. The focus was always on consistent practice, self-development, and simply using the energy.

What often gets overlooked is that confidence and experience grow through practice. A brand-new student may feel uncertain, notice very little when they place their hands on someone, and wonder if anything is happening at all. That doesn't mean they need another attunement; it usually just means they need time.

The solution to uncertainty is practice, not collecting more certificates or attunements.

Over the years, I've worked with students who felt very little during class and later became excellent practitioners. I've also met people who reported dramatic sensations from day one but never developed a consistent daily practice. The sensations themselves were never the determining factor.

So when someone says they had to "re-attune" a student because the Reiki wasn't strong enough, I think it's worth asking a few honest questions:

How was that conclusion reached? What evidence supports it? And most importantly, does telling a student that their Reiki is weak actually help them—or does it just create doubt where none is needed?

In my experience, many Reiki students don't need fixing. They need reassurance, practice, and permission to stop worrying about whether they're doing it "right."
