How to Tell When Someone Else’s Energy is Affecting You

Have you ever walked into a room and immediately felt heavy, anxious, or drained, without knowing why? Or left a conversation feeling unsettled and tired, even though nothing particularly stressful happened? You might have picked up on someone else’s energy.

Being sensitive to the energy around you can be a gift, but it can also be confusing if you don’t know how to recognize it. Other people’s emotions, thoughts, or unresolved stress can subtly shift your own energy and affect your mood, focus, and even your body.

Here’s how to tell when it’s not yours:

  • You feel sudden fatigue, tension, or a shift in mood that doesn’t match your circumstances.

  • You notice emotions rising quickly—like irritation, sadness, or anxiety—without a clear reason.

  • Physical sensations appear, like tightness in your chest, headaches, or restlessness, especially after being around certain people.

  • Your thoughts become scattered, heavy, or obsessive after interacting with someone else.

Once you recognize that it might not be your energy, you can take steps to protect yourself. Grounding, deep breathing, and visualizing a protective light around you are simple ways to stay centered. Reiki and energy clearing sessions can also help release picked-up energy and restore balance.

With the holidays coming, it’s easy to absorb extra stress and emotion from family, friends, and social obligations. Being intentional about your energy now can make a big difference in how you show up for yourself and others.

If you want extra guidance in protecting your energy during this busy time, my Sacred Unraveling program and Reclaim Your Magic mentorship provide tools and personalized support for staying grounded, clearing energy you’ve picked up from others, and maintaining your own center no matter what’s happening around you.

Pay attention to your body and intuition—they will tell you when your energy is being influenced by others. Learning to notice and release it allows you to stay calm, clear, and connected to your own center, even in the midst of holiday chaos.
