“I’m Only Level 2 and Can Only Send Healing”

I recently saw a Reiki practitioner say, “I’m Level 2 and only send healing. I feel where it needs to be applied, but I can’t remove or identify the source. I do know a lot of it is me being stuck in my head, but wish I could help others more.”

Reading that made me pause a bit because there’s something really common wrapped up in that statement: the belief that Reiki practitioners are supposed to do more than simply allow Reiki to flow. Somewhere along the way, a lot of people picked up the idea that being “good at Reiki” means being able to identify exactly what’s wrong with someone, trace it back to a root cause, remove blocks, fix energetic issues, and basically explain the entire inner workings of another person’s experience.

But that’s not actually what Reiki is asking of us.

The Trap of the "Energetic Diagnostician

Reiki was never designed to turn practitioners into energetic diagnosticians. It isn’t a system that requires us to figure everything out or uncover hidden layers in order for healing to happen. At its core, Reiki is much simpler than that. We connect, we allow, and we trust the flow of the energy.

Intuition vs. Reiki: Understanding the Difference

Of course, some practitioners are naturally intuitive and may receive impressions, sensations, emotions, or even clear insights during a session. That can happen, and it can be helpful when it does. But intuition and Reiki are not the same thing. One is a natural human ability that varies from person to person, and the other is a healing practice that works whether or not any intuitive information shows up at all. A practitioner can be deeply effective without ever receiving specific “messages” during a session, just as someone can be highly intuitive without practicing Reiki.

Why Simply Holding Space is More Than Enough

What stood out most in that original comment was the feeling underneath it: “I wish I could help others more.” That’s the part I keep coming back to, because it suggests a belief that simply sending Reiki somehow isn’t enough. But if someone comes to you stressed, anxious, grieving, overwhelmed, or just energetically depleted, and they leave your session feeling calmer, more settled, able to breathe more deeply, or simply more at ease in their own body, then Reiki has already done something meaningful. That is helping.

It’s easy to get caught in the idea that we need to do more in a session. More techniques, more insight, more explanations, more “knowing.” A lot of that pressure comes from our own minds wanting certainty or wanting to feel like we are in control of the healing process. But Reiki doesn’t require us to carry all of that. In fact, it often works best when we step out of the way a bit and let it be what it is.

After more than twenty years of practicing, I’ve seen some of the most powerful sessions be the quietest ones. No dramatic information coming through, no big intuitive downloads, no sense of “figuring anything out.” Just Reiki flowing and the client receiving exactly what they needed in that moment. Simple, steady, and often deeply effective in a way that doesn’t always need explanation.

If you can feel where Reiki wants to go, follow that. If you don’t know the source of something, that’s okay. If you don’t receive any intuitive information at all during a session, that’s also okay. None of those things determine whether Reiki is working.

You don’t have to identify every issue to be effective. You don’t have to remove anything or diagnose anything or prove anything in order for healing to happen. Sometimes the most grounded thing a practitioner can do is trust the process, stay present, and allow Reiki to do what it already knows how to do.

If you are a Reiki practitioner navigating these pressures and want to return to a more grounded, confident, and simple practice, I support students through these exact transitions in my 1:1 Reiki Mentoring sessions. You don't have to carry the pressure of fixing everything to be an incredible channel for healing.
