When Do I Use Reiki Symbols?
One of the most common questions I get from Reiki students is when they should use the Reiki symbols. The answer may surprise you.
There isn't one right way.
Over the years, I've noticed that many Reiki practitioners are taught that the symbols are what make Reiki work. They're told the symbols increase the power, direct the energy, send the energy, protect the energy, or somehow activate Reiki itself.
Personally, I don't view the symbols that way.
I don't believe Reiki lives inside the symbols, and I don't believe a symbol has power on its own. If that were true, anyone who drew the symbol on a piece of paper would instantly become a Reiki practitioner.
Instead, I see the symbols as tools that help focus attention and intention within the practice.
For me, the symbols are reminders. They help me settle into a particular aspect of Reiki and bring my awareness to a specific purpose. In that sense, they are valuable. But I don't think they are required for Reiki to flow.
After all, Reiki students in Level One practice Reiki without symbols. The Reiki is already there.
When I use the symbols, I don't use them because I think they are turning Reiki on. I use them because they help me focus.
For example, I may use a symbol before a session as a way of becoming present and shifting my attention away from my day and into the work. During a distance session, I may use a symbol as a point of focus when connecting with someone who is not physically in front of me. Other times, I may not use the symbols at all.
The longer I practice Reiki, the less concerned I am with whether a symbol was drawn correctly or used in the perfect sequence. What matters more to me is the quality of presence I bring to the session.
I think students sometimes become so focused on remembering the symbols that they forget the most important part of Reiki: showing up.
If you find the symbols helpful, use them.
If a symbol helps you settle your mind, deepen your focus, or connect with the intention of the session, that's wonderful.
Just remember that the symbol is not the source of Reiki.
You are not drawing power onto the page.
You are participating in a practice.
The symbols can be meaningful companions along the way, but they are not what makes Reiki possible.
That has already been given to you.
Reiki on,
Vickie
